Training Description
Active bystanders present a critical role in preventing sexual violence. In most instances, however, bystanders do not know how or when to intervene when sexual violence is present. In this workshop, attendees will learn about cutting edge, best practice bystander intervention strategies that aim to prevent sexual violence on a community level. Attendees will also gain an understanding of how the bystander approach allows people to intervene before sexual violence has occurred, preventing initial perpetration and victimization. Finally, attendees will learn the tools to use to teach others about bystander intervention as well as the additional intervention opportunities to prevent sexual violence.
Trainer Biography
Joan Tabachnick, MBA is nationally recognized for her expertise in sexual violence prevention and social marketing. Over the past 25 years, she has developed award-winning educational materials and innovative programs for a wide variety of national, state, and local organizations. Since having created programming for a national nonprofit (Stop It Now!), Ms. Tabachnick has been the director of NEARI Press, the executive director of MASOC, and a fellow with the SMART Office of the United States Department of Justice. She is also on the executive committee of the National Coalition to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation, is founding co-chair of ATSA’s prevention committee, and serves on a number of statewide task forces.
Learning Objectives
This training is designed to help you:
  • Identify the effects of being a bystander during a sexual assault
  • Determine when the appropriate time is to intervene to prevent a sexual assault
  • Overcome bystander apathy so as to intervene during a sexual assault
